Vale Ian Shields

It is with much sadness that we learned of the sudden

passing of one of our former colleagues, Ian Shields.

Ian dedicated over two decades to serving as an umpire with the VSDCA, from 2000--01 to 2020-21, officiating in 242 games, which included 15 finals. Two of these finals were 2nd XI Group Finals.

He won the Matt Harris Shield as Most Improved Umpire in his first season, a remarkable achievement.  Other accolades he gathered included Life Membership of the VSDCUA in 2012, and VSDCUA ‘200 Club’ membership and VSDCA '200 Club' Membership in 2017,

Before joining our ranks, Ian had a storied career with Ormond Cricket Club, whom he joined in 1966. Here are some of his achievements (of which there were many);

• 336 games (79 in the 1st XI), two-time 1st XI Premiership Player,

• Committee Member for twenty four years

• Seven seasons as President

• Secretary for four Seasons

• Treasurer for six Seasons

• VSDCA Delegate for seven Seasons

By all accounts, retirement did not diminish Ian’s involvement in cricket. After moving to Castlemaine to be closer to family, he turned his hand to volunteering, and Castlemaine United Cricket Club benefited greatly from his service. The fact that Ian lived near the ground was another stroke of luck for the club.

While he was here, he earned a Cricket Victoria 'Volunteer of the Month' Award. In 2022, Ian’s dedication to cricket was further honoured when he received the 50 Years of Service Award from Cricket Victoria.

His volunteering was not confined to the cricket club, as he also involved himself with the local golf club and other community groups, with the same commitment he had shown with Ormond.

It can be said without doubt, that Ian's passing will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
