Since 1972 the VSDCUA have awarded a trophy to the best player in each section of the J.G. Craig Under 15 competition and also in its forerunner the R.M. Hatch Under 14 competition.
Starting with the next edition of this marquee VSDCA event, these awards will be named to recognise umpires who have provided not only long, but exceptional service to the VSDCA.
The committee called for nominations from the members and after careful consideration the following members were selected.
North Group Noki Tryphonos 28 years service, 450 games plus 276 with the now defunct Metropolitan Cricket league for a game total of 726 games over a 49 year span.
South Group James Barrett
11 years service and was instrumental in restructuring the VSDCUA's internal machinations and also has served as President, Vice President and is our current Apparel Manager and organiser of our popular end of season function. And in his spare time he has umpired 167 games.
East Group Merv Hindson
Merv has been involved with cricket both as a player/coach/umpire for over 60 years. He has been with Subbies for 28 years and has currently logged a total of 460 games and last season clocked up his 350th 1st XI game. He has served on the committee and ran the apparel portfolio for a time as well. One of the 'characters' of our panel.
West Group Mike Wheelahan
Mike has been with Subbies for 29 years and has umpired 457 games, and earlier this season like Merv, he umpired his 350th 1st XI game. Mike also had an extensive playing career, plying his wily spin bowling talents with Footscray for 4 years and Sunshine, Melton and Altona in the Subbies competition.
Congratulations to all these fine servants of the VSDCA!
